Reflections on Maxwell’s Treatise

چکیده

Over a period of about twenty years, Maxwell’s determination and unification of the equations of electricity and magnetism evolved from his first paper on the subject in 1855–56, “On Faraday’s Lines of Force,” to the publication of his Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism in 1873. Notwithstanding the many historical accounts and textbooks devoted to Maxwell’s work, I have not been able to find a reasonably concise, yet definitive summary of the fundamentals of exactly what Maxwell did in his Treatise and how he did it. This paper represents my own attempt to provide such a summary.

How inductive inferences can be grounded on salience alone: some reflections on the emergence of conventions

Conventions fall into the domains of both philosophy and economics. In the study of convention, the interplay of the two disciplines has proved to be productive. As its practitioners often acknowledge, many of the key ideas in the modern theory of convention were first proposed by David Hume in his Treatise of Human Nature (1739–40/ 1978). Although Hume‟s Treatise is now usually classified as o...

Early Italian Computing Machines and Their Inventors

Nineteen centuries of Italian inventors and inventions in the field of aids to arithmetic and algebraic computing, before the electronic computer era, are reviewed; most of them forgotten or still unknown. Not meant to be a complete or ultimate treatise on the topic, this paper hopefully wants to be a starting point for more multidisciplinary research of Italian history of technology.

Void detection in foam with knit lines using THz pulse interrogation

We model electromagnetic interrogation of a polyurethane foam using the TE mode of the 2D Maxwell’s equations reduced to the wave equation for a fixed frequency in the THz regime. The foam block target contains knit lines which are modeled by modifying the speed of propagation, i.e., by altering the index of refraction. We describe our efforts to estimate the dielectric constant in the knit lin...
